Vietnam is officially a "Socialist Republic". The Vietnamese Communist Partycontrols all the country's political institutions. The party joined the ideas of former leader Ho Chi Minh, where Article 4 of the Constitution which states: "The Communist Party of Vietnam, detachment vanguard of the working class, the faithful representative of the interests of the working class, the working people and the nation, a follower of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh's thought, is the leading force of the state and society. "

The Vietnamese National Assembly is the supreme body of state and is renewed every five years. Elections are by indirect suffrage, all Vietnamese aged over 18 are allowed to vote. The President of the Vietnamese state (which is a symbolic role), the Prime Minister and his Government are elected by the People's Assembly. They are the second and third characters of the state. The supreme power of the state is assigned to the Secretary General of Vietnamese Communist Party.

Since 1997, Nguyen Minh Triet is the President of Vietnam, Nguyen Tan Dung is the Prime Minister. Nguyen Phu Trong is for its General Secretary of the Party since 2011.
